In an inert 100 mL three-necked flask 5.00 g (32.9 mmol, 1.00 eq) 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzoic acid and 16.3 g (159 mmol, 16.1 mL, 4.86 eq) acetic acid anhydride were mixed. To this suspension a catalytic amount (6.44 mg (657 μηιοΙ, 3.50 il, 0.02 eq)) of concentrated sulphuric acid was added. After 1 hour 70.0 mL water were added and stirring was continued for additional 17 h. The precipitate was filtered off, washed with 100 mL water. The title compound was obtained as a colourless solid in 6.22 g (32.0 mmol, 98 %).
