Representative procedure for the preparation of 2-(2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)acetic acid (9a)
General procedure: To a stirred solution of methyl 2-(2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)acetate 8a (200 mg, 0.75 mmol) in MeOH (2 mL) was added 1 N NaOH solution (2.25 mL, 2.25 mmol) dropwise. After stirring at room temperature for 30 min, 1 N HCl solution was added dropwise to acidify to pH 3. The reaction mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3 ~ 50 mL) and washed with H2O (~ 30 mL). The organic layer was dried over anhydrous MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo to yield the title product 9a (150 mg, 80%).
