Steps:
3-(2-Methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)propan-1-ol (2b).
A mixture of 4.62 g (0.056 mol) of 2-methylimidazole,5.4 g (0.056 mol) of trimethylene carbonate, and 9 mLof toluene was refluxed for 5 h. After cooling, thebottom layer was separated and distilled under reducedpressure. Yield 3.99 g (76%), bp 155-157°C(5 mm Hg). 1H NMR spectrum, δ, ppm: 1.78 q (2H,CH2, J = 6.6 Hz), 2.26 s (3H, CH3), 3.34-3.40 m (2H,CH2O), 3.91 t (2H, CH2N, J = 7.1 Hz), 4.76 br.s (1H,OH), 6.71 d (1H, 4-H, J = 1.3 Hz), 7.01 d (1H, 5-H,J = 1.3 Hz). Found, %: C 60.01; H 8.69; N 20.01.C7H12N2O. Calculated, %: C 59.98; H 8.63; N 19.98.
