Steps:

1 Production of Ethy/ 3-(3-hydr oxyphenyQpropanoate (2)

(E)-Ethyl 3-(3-hvdroxyphenyl)acrylate (1) (2 2 g 326 0 mmol) and 10% palladium on carbon (50% wt water) in ethanol (260 rnL) was stirred in an autoclave at 140 psi of hydrogen for 1 hour, in 3 batches. The 3 batches were combined, filtered through Celite, washing thoroughly with ethanol. The filtrate was concentrated to give ethyl 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)propanoate (2) as a pale tan oil (63 23 g, 100%) ‘H NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3) ? 7.23 (m, IH), 6.82 (br 5. 1H), 6.85- 620 (rn, 3Ff), 424 (q, 2H, J 71 Hz), 3.00 it. 2H, J 7.5 Hz), 2.72 It, 2H, J 75 Hz), 1.34 it, 3H, J 7.1 Hz).
