Steps:

General Procedure for the Preparation of Xanthone and Thioxanthone Derivatives
General procedure: To a mixture of phenols derivatives (1 mmol) and salicylic acid/ thiosalicilic acid derivatives (1 mmol) were added heteropoly acid (0.05 mmol). The homogenized mixture was placed in vessel microwave and was irradiated in the microwave oven within 4 min. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool, poured into ethyl acetate and extracted with a sat. aq solution of NaHCO3 (3*15 ml). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated in vacuum to give an impure residue. Chromatography of the crude products was performed on a column of silica gel eluted with n-hexane/EtOAc, to give pure crystalline products. The products were characterized by comparison of their NMR, IR, MS. The spectral data is given below.
