General procedure: The corresponding 3-methyl-N-(nitrophenyl)benzamides or nitro-N-3 tolylbenzamide (18, 10 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of dilute aqueous HCl solution (2-N, 20 mL) and EtOH (20 mL).Then, tin (II) chloride dihydrate (40 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was heated to 90 °C until the solid completely dissolved. After 10 min of stirring at this temperature, EtOH was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was poured into EtOAc (200 mL) containing 15 g of sodium carbonate. The solution was filtered and washed with EtOAc (100 mL). The filtrate was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residual solid was recrystallized in EtOAc/cyclohexane (3: 2).
