Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:methyl-triphenylphosphonium iodide with potassium carbonate in 1,2-dimethoxyethane for 1 h;Inert atmosphere;Wittig Olefination;
Stage #2:4-methyl-benzaldehyde in 1,2-dimethoxyethane at 80; for 24 h;Inert atmosphere;Wittig Olefination;

Steps:

2 4.4.1 General procedure of the preparation of styrenes 6a-d
General procedure: To a solution of methyltriphenylphosphonium iodide (22.61mmol; 1.2equiv) in dry DME (50mL), K2CO3 (28.26mmol; 1.5equiv) was added in several portions, and stirring under argon was continued for 1h. Then the aldehyde (18.84mmol; 1equiv) was added and stirring was continued for overnight at 80°C. After cooling, 30mL of diethyl ether was added to precipitate the insoluble salts. The mixture was collected by suction filtration, washed with ether, and the solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by chromatography on silica gel using cyclohexane as an eluent.
