Reaction Conditions:
Stage #1: 4-(pyridin-2-yloxy)benzoic acid ethyl esterwith sodium hydroxide;ethanol;water at 20; for 3 h;
Stage #2: with hydrogenchloride pH=3 - 4;
Steps:

4-(2-Pyridyloxy)benzoic acid 2-(4-Ethoxycarbonylphenoxy)pyridine (2.43g, 9.99mmol), 90mL of ethanol and 50mL of 1mol/L aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide were mixed and the mixture was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue was brought to pH3 to 4 with dilute hydrochloric acid. The precipitates produced were filtered, washed with water, and then dried to obtain 2.07g (96%) of the title compound as colorless powder. Mass analysis m/z 215(M+).
