Steps:
Preparation of (5-methyl-1 ,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)methanol.
To a solution of 5-methyl-1 ,2,4-oxadiazole-3-carboxylate (400 mg, 2.56 mmol) in THF (4 mL) and ethanol (4 mL) was added NaBH4(290 mg, 7.68 mmol) at 0°C. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0°C for 1 hour. The reaction was quenched with NH4CI, and the mixture was concentrated under vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (petroleum ether:ethyl acetate=1 /0 to 1 /1 ) to give (5-methyl-1 ,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)methanol (250 mg).
