A solution of 5-E (3.38 g, 15.4 mmol) in 50 mL of dichloromethane was cooled to-5 C. To this a solution of BBr3 (31 mL, 30.8 mmol) in CHzCl2 (1.0 M) was added. The solution was stirred at-5 C for 1 hour. Additional 15 mL of BBr3 solution was added and the reaction was stirred for 1 hour at 0 C. The solution was poured into saturated NaHC03/ice. The organic layer was then separated. The water layer was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layer was washed (brine), dried over MgS04 and concentrated to give the title compound 5 (3.16 g, 99%) as a solid.
