The similar reaction of Reference Example 17 was repeated except that 590 mg of (R)-2-benzyl-3-acetyloxy-1-propanol obtained in Reference example 7 were used as a starting material, and 301 mg of white crystal of (S)-2-benzyl-3-hydroxypropionic acid were obtained. The optical purity of the thus obtained (S)-2-benzyl-3-hydroxypropionic acid was determined in the same manner as described in Reference example 17. [α]d20; -13.9° (c=0.97, CHCl3); Optical purity: 98.5% e.e.
