20.8 g of L-cystine (83.2 mmol) was dissolved in 100 mL of anhydrous methanol and 19.8 g of thionyl chloride (166.5 mmol) was slowly added dropwise under ice-cooling. After completion of the addition in half an hour, the reaction was continued for 12 h, the organic phase was combined and washed with saturated brine 40 mL. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated to dryness to give a colorless solid. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel eluting with ethyl acetate. L-cystine methyl ester (21.8 g, 81.3 mmol) in 98% yield.
