Step 4 5 g of 1-(2-methyl-3-nitrophenyl)ethanone is dissolved in about 50 mL of methanol and hydrogenated at 20° C. and 5 bar with hydrogen using Raney nickel as catalyst. The catalyst is separated off and the filtrate is evaporated down under reduced pressure. The product is purified by chromatography (silica gel, eluant: cyclohexane/ethyl acetate (3/1)). 3.5 g of 1-(2-methyl-3-aminophenyl)ethanone is obtained as light yellow crystals.
