Steps:
Ethyl-3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoate (3a)
A mixture of 2 (0.84 g, 5 mmol) and concentrated H2SO4 (0.5 mL) inanhydrous ethanol (20 mL) was stirred at reflux for 8 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the resulting residue wasextracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with saturated NaHCO3 and water, dried over Na2SO4, and evaporatedto afford 3a (0.93 g, 95%).
