To a suspension of 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-2-carboxylic acid (400 mg; 2.88 mmol) in 10 mL ethanol is added thionyl chloride (315 μL; 4.31 mmol) and the reaction mixture is stirred for 90 minutes at reflux. The reaction mixture is concentrated under reduced pressure.
