Ethyl isobutyrate synthesis

7synthesis methods
By esterification of ethanol with isobutyric acid under azeotropic conditions.
-

Yield:97-62-1 68.9%

Reaction Conditions:

with toluene-4-sulfonic acid in cyclohexane;Reflux;

Steps:

To a solution of isobutyric acid (88.0 g, 1 mol) in ethanol(90 mL) and cyclohexane (20 mL), p-toluenesulfonic acid(1.8 g, 2%) was added. The reaction was refluxed until nowater appeared in water separator. The mixture was cooleddown and washed by water, saturated sodium bicarbonateaqueous solution and saturated sodium chloride,respectively, then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate.After cyclohexane was removed by distillation under vacuum,then 109-113 °C distillate was collected to get ethylisobutyrate (58.0 g, 0.5 mol). Yield: 68.9%.
