Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: propylamine;4-fluorobenzaldehyde in tetrahydrofuran;methanol at 20;Molecular sieve;
Stage #2: with sodium tetrahydroborate in tetrahydrofuran;methanol at 20; for 3 h;

Steps:

75.75A 75 A. N-(4-fluorobenzyl)propan- 1 -amine

To a stirred solution of propan- 1 -amine (2.381 g, 40.3 mmol) in THF (15 mL) and MeOH (15 mL) was added 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (5 g, 40.3 mmol) followed by 4 A molecular sieves (3 g) at ambient temperature and stirred for overnight. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0 °C, added NaBH4 (4.57 g, 121 mmol) portion wise and stirred at RT for 3 h. The solvent was removed completely and resultant semi solid was quenched with 10% NaHC03 solution, extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 25 mL), the organic layer was washed with brine (50 mL), dried over Na2S04 and concentrated to afford 75A (colorless oil, 6 g, 35.9 mmol, 89 % yield) which was carried for next step without further purification. LC-MS Anal.Calc’d for CIOHI4FN 167.111, found [M+H] 168.2, Tr = 2.535 min (Method U).
