Tert-butyl 4-bromo-2-methylbenzoate. A solution of 4-dimethylamiopryidine (0.012 mol, 1.5 g) in 20 mL of tert-butanol was added to solution of 4-bromo-2-methylbenzoic acid (5 g, 0.023 mol) and di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (10.13 g, 0.046 mol) in 30 mL of tert- butanol. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The mixture was concentrated and subjected to column chromatography (silica gel, petroleum ether/ethyl acetate = 20: 1) to give tert-butyl 4-bromo-2-methylbenzoate (6 g, 98%).
