Ethylbenzene Chemical Properties,Uses,Production

Chemical Properties

Ethylbenzene is a colorless, flammable liquid that smells like gasoline. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Hence floats on water. Vapors are heavier than air. It belongs to the family of Substituted Benzenes. These are aromatic compounds containing a benzene substituted at one or more positions. It is found in natural products such as coal tar and petroleum and is also found in manufactured products such as inks, insecticides, and paints. Ethylbenzene is used primarily to make another chemical, styrene. Other uses include as a solvent, in fuels, and to make other chemicals.

Uses

  1. Ethylbenzene is an organic compound most commonly used in the production of plastics.
  2. Ethylbenzene is mainly used in the manufacture of styrene. the main use of which is in the manufacture of styrene-based polymers. These polymers are in turn used in products such as packaging, kitchen utensils and electronic equipment housing. Ethyl benzene is also used as a process solvent in industrial settings; its application as a solvent in the professional or consumer sector is not supported.
  3. Ethylbenzene is often found in mixed xylene solvents (at up to 25%) which are used in paints (Arts and Craft and Interior/Exterior Building), coatings, lacquers, varnishes, adhesives, inks,Rust Prevention Spray, pesticides, cleaning materials, dyes, perfumes, pharmaceuticals, Synthetic Rubber, and plastics. It is also used as a solvent and reagent for making various other chemicals. It is found in asphalt and naphtha, tobacco products, Airplane Fuel, and Auto gasoline (at up to 15%).
  4. Ethylbenzene may be used as a starting material to synthesize: (1) Acetophenone via selection oxidation in the presence of potassium dichromate supported on neutral alumina and using air as the oxidizing agent.  (2) Styrene via dehydrogenation over nanodiamonds in an oxygen-lean environment.

Uses

For conversion to styrene monomer; as resin solvent.

General Description

A clear colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. Flash point 59°F. Less dense than water (at 7.2 lb / gal) and insoluble in water. Hence floats on water. Vapors heavier than air. Used as a solvent and to make other chemicals.

Health Hazard

  1. Ethylbenzene is a volatile organic compound (VOC) in the 'BTEX' substance group which includes benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. It exists naturally in petroleum, and is also an industrial chemical with a variety of uses.
  2. Exposure to high concentrations can cause people to become, dizzy, lightheaded, and to pass out.
  3. Ethylbenzene is considered the most sever irritant of all of the benzene compounds.Direct skin exposure to liquid can cause first degree burns.
  4. Respiratory effects, such as throat irritation and chest constriction, irritation of the eyes, and neurological Respiratory effects, such as throat irritation and chest constriction, irritation of the eyes, and neurological effects such as dizziness, have been noted from acute inhalation exposure to ethylbenzene in humans.
  5. Animal studies have reported central nervous system (CNS) toxicity; pulmonary effects; and effects on the liver, kidney, and eyes (irritation) from acute inhalation exposure to ethylbenzene.
  6. Tests involving acute exposure of rats have shown ethylbenzene to have moderate toxicity from inhalation and oral exposure.
  7. In a study by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), exposure to ethylbenzene by inhalation resulted in an increased incidence of kidney and testicular tumors in rats, and lung and liver tumors in mice. EPA has classified ethylbenzene as a Group D, not classifiable as to human carcinogenicity.
  8. The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists ethylbenzene as possibly carcinogenic.
  9. Ethylbenzene has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans. Available epidemiological studies did not provide adequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans, however animal studies showed an increase in lung and liver cancers in mice and kidney cancers in rats exposed to ethylbenzene.
