| Silver Sulfide Usage And Synthesis |
Physical Properties | Grayish-black orthogonal crystals or powder; density 7.23 g/cm3; Moh’s hardness 2.3; melts at 825°C; insoluble in water; soluble in nitric and sulfuric acids.
| Occurrence and Uses | Silver sulfide occurs in nature as mineral argentite. It is used in ceramics.
| Preparation | Mineral argentite is mined from mineral deposits, crushed, ground, and washed for use. In the laboratory, silver sulfide is obtained by passing hydrogen sulfide gas through a solution of silver nitrate. The precipitate is washed with hot water.
| Chemical Properties | Grayish-black powder.Soluble in concentrated
sulfuric and nitric acids; insoluble in water. | Physical properties | Physical Properties Grayish-black orthogonal crystals or powder; density 7.23 g/cm3; Moh’s hardness 2.3; melts at 825°C; insoluble in water; soluble in nitric and sulfuric acids. | Uses | Silver sulfide is a brownish back powder formed by the combination
of an alkaline sulfide with silver. It is a very stable compound
made when toning silver-based images in sulfides. It is soluble in
sulfuric and nitric acids but insoluble in water and alcohol. | Uses | Silver sulfide is useful as a photosensitizer in photography, Intermediates, chemical research. | Uses | Inlaying in niello metalwork, ceramics. | General Description | SRM 8553_cert SRM 8553 _SDS |
