The diazotization reaction was carried out using sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid in acetonitrile solvent at 0 °C using 4-bromo-2,6-dimethylaniline as starting material. Subsequently, the diazonium group was converted to iodine by addition of potassium iodide to afford the target product 5-bromo-2-iodo-1,3-xylene in 96% yield.
