Pentylene glycol (10 g, 0.1 mol), cyanoacetamide (8.4 g, 0.1 mol), and sodium hydroxide (4 g, 0.1 mol) were added to anhydrous ethanol and stirred overnight at room temperature. The reaction was monitored by TLC until completion, at which point the reaction was stopped. The precipitated solid was filtered, washed with a small amount of water, ethanol, and diethyl ether, and dried to give 142 g (95.8%) of a white solid, 3-cyano-4,6-dimethyl-2-hydroxypyridine. |
