3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate is a member of the class of nondetergent sulfobetaines. Unlike CHAPS and other zwittergents, 3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate are nondenaturing even at 1 M concentrations. 3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate have been used to improve the efficiency of solubilization of membrane proteins, to isolate nuclear proteins, to chromatographically purify halophilic proteins in low ionic strength buffers, and to crystallize proteins. They are zwitterionic over a wide pH range and do not absorb significantly in the near UV range. Reported to prevent protein aggregation and facilitate the renaturation of chemically and thermally denatured proteins. 3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate can be easily removed by dialysis.

3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate can be used:

• As a Bronsted acid ionic liquid catalyst in combination with H2SO4 and H3PO4 for the dehydration of glycerol to acrolein via semi-batch reaction technique.

• As a catalyst in the form of sulfonated heteropoly acid salts for the synthesis of isoamyl isovalerate.

• In the preparation of molybdenum imido alkylidene NHC catalysts, which are used in biphasic olefin metathesis.

• To prepare water-stable SO3H-functionalized Brønsted acidic task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs).

In was bright nickel plating, it is a start material to make brightener, A high efficiency brightener and leveler. Because of its high purity, 3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate cannot carry other harmful impurity or salts to baths. There will not have problem of ductility in long duration. It is used to combine With saccharin, one or more ethylene derivatives and wetting agents. These process make the deposits more bright , level with good ductile character. It is also suitable for still bath. 

3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate can be used as a mild solubilizing and stabilizing agent for halophilic malate dehydrogenase, halophilic elongation factor Tu (hTu), pig heart malate dehydrogenase, chicken egg white lysozyme and E. coli beta-galactosidase. Preserves the antigenic conformation of serine protease gp76. Does not interfere with colorimetric assays using p-nitrophenylphosphate and o-nitrophenyl-b-D-galactopyranoside as substrates. Reduces aggregation and significantly improves protein renaturation. Zwitterionic over a wide pH range. Does not absorb significantly in the near-UV range. 3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate can be easily removed by dialysis. 3-(1-Pyridinio)-1-propanesulfonate is suitable for malate dehydrogenase (MDH) related research[3-4].
