What to avoid when using 5-Fluorouracil cream?

Mar 24,2026

5‑Fluorouracil cream is a topical prescription medication primarily used to treat actinic keratoses, superficial basal cell carcinomas, and certain other skin growths by interfering with the growth of abnormal skin cells. When using this cream, avoid contact with the eyes, eyelids, nostrils, lips, and mucous membranes, as it can cause severe irritation and tissue damage. Do not apply it to open wounds, inflamed or infected skin areas, or healthy skin unnecessarily to prevent unnecessary redness, burning, or peeling. Also avoid excessive sun exposure, sunlamps, and tanning beds during treatment, since the medication makes skin much more sensitive to ultraviolet light, and refrain from covering treated areas with airtight occlusive dressings unless specifically directed by a doctor.
