To 1-chloro-2-phenylethane (20 g, 0.14 mol) at 0 C was added fuming nitric acid (20 ml) dropwise. The mixture was stirred at the same temperature for an additional 45 min. The reaction was quenched cautiously with water (200 mL). It was extracted with dichloromethane (100 mL), dried over MgSO4, and crystallized from chloroform/hexane to obtain 2 (8.0 g, 30 %).1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.20 (d, 2H), 7.40 (d, 2H), 3.75 (t, 2H), 3.20 (t, 2H)
