The general procedure for the synthesis of p-aminophenethyl alcohol from p-nitrophenylethanol is as follows: 1. In a 1000 mL three-necked flask equipped with a thermometer, a mechanical stirrer, and a reflux condenser, 10 mL of 0.1 M hydrochloric acid solution, 500 mL of methanol, and 2 g of Pt-SnO2/C catalyst were added and heated to 68°C. The reaction system was then heated to 68°C. The reaction system was then heated to 68°C. 2. 100 g of p-nitrophenyl ethanol was added to the reaction system, the pH was adjusted to 7 with 30% NaOH solution, stirred and water was added slowly and dropwise, and 75 g of distillate was collected, heated to reflux, and the reflux temperature was maintained at 68°C. The progress of the reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC) until the disappearance of the feedstock point indicated the completion of the reaction. The reaction mixture was cooled to 20°C, appropriate amount of water and a small amount of NaOH solution were added and processed by freezing and vacuum drying to obtain 4-aminophenethyl alcohol as a white solid.
