Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: phthalic anhydride;3-diethylaminophenol in toluene;Inert atmosphere;Reflux;
Stage #2: with sodium hydroxide in toluene at 50 - 90; for 6 h;Inert atmosphere;

Steps:

2-Carboxyl-4’-diethylamino-2’-hydroxy benzophenone (1).

3-Diethylamino phenol(10.00 g, 60.52 mmol) and phthalic anhydride (8.96 g, 60.52 mmol) in toluene (50 mL) wererefluxed under nitrogen for 4 h. The mixture was cooled to 50-60oC. 50mL of 35% NaOH (w/w)aqueous solution was added and then heated to 90oC for 6 h. The resulting mixture was pouredinto 200 g ice, acidified with concentrated HCl, and allowed to stand at room temperature for2 h. The suspension was filtered, and the solid was recrystallized from ethanol, then dried toafford the desired product (18.60 g) in a 98% yield.
