(a) tert-butyl S-chloroS-formyl-lH-indole-l-carboxylate; A mixture of S-chloro-lH-indole-S-carbaldehyde (WO 00/12510) (1.08 g, 6.0 mmol), 0 potassium carbonate (4.15 g, 30.0 mmol) and Boc2O (3.27 g, 15.0 mmol) in TηF (25 ml) was stirred for 19 h and then evaporated in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between water (25 ml) and chloroform (3x25 ml) and the organic phase was dried over MgSO4, evaporated and purified by flash chromatography using heptane: ethyl acetate 3:1 giving the title compound (1.65 g, 98%) as a solid. as 1H NMR (DMSO-dδ) δ ppm 10.08 (IH), 8.73 (IH), 8.12 (2H), 7.50 (IH), 1.68 (9H).
