with water;sodium hydroxide in methanol at 50;

Steps:

The white solid was dissolved in methanol (8 mL), and sodium hydroxide in water (5M, 2 mL) was added. The solution was heated to 50 °C for 2 h. The reaction was cooled to rt, diluted with water (10 mL), and acidified to pH 4 with 5N aq HC1. A white solid was collected via suction filtration, washed with water, and further dried under vacuum to give the title compound 4-(4-Formylphenoxy)benzoic acid (790 mg, 84% yield). MS m/z 241.0 (M-H).
