1. 5-Bromo-2-(2H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (226 g), formaldehyde (90 g) and 10% palladium-carbon catalyst (20 g) were added to a reactor in 1.5 L of methanol. 2. The reaction was stirred at room temperature under hydrogen atmosphere (0.2 MPa) for 3 h. 3. Upon completion of the reaction, the organic phase was removed by evaporation. 4. The residue was recrystallized using acetonitrile to afford the target product 2-methyl-5-(5-bromo-2-pyridinyl)tetrazole (217 g) in 90.4% yield.
