Steps:

3 7-Hydroxy-3-methyl-2H-chromen-2-one
To a 10 mL RB flask was added 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (1 g), sodium propionate (1.5 g), piperidine (0.1 mL) and propionic anhydride (2.5 mL).
The mixture was heated to 170° C., poured into ice water, and 1N HCl was added to bring the pH to ca. 3.
The solid was collected by filtration, mixed with 1 mL of sulfuric acid, and poured into ice water.
The solid was collected, washed with H2O and ether, and dried under vacuum. Yield: 85%.
