Reaction Conditions:

in ethanol;

Steps:

1 Preparation of Compound of Formula II

EXAMPLE 1 Preparation of Compound of Formula II 1.53 g of 5-hydroxy-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril and 3.5 g of epichlorohydrin were added to 30 ml of a methanolic solution of 0.216 g of sodium metal and the resulting solution was stirred at a temperature of from 55° to 60° C. for 4 hours. After allowing the solution to cool, the precipitated sodium chloride was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. To the resulting residue was added acetone to crystallize the product. Recrystallization of the product from ethanol gave 0.8 g of 5-(2,3-epoxy)propoxy-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril having a melting point of 172°-173° C. as a colorless amorphous solid. A solution of the filtrate in acetone was concentrated to dryness and the resulting residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 0.05 g of 5-(2-hydroxy-3-chloro)propoxy-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril having a melting point of 157°-158° C. as a colorless amorphous solid.
