6 Example 6; Synthesis of cyclopropylacetonitrile

A 50-ml three-necked flask equipped with a cooler, a thermometer and a stirrer was charged with 16.8 g (0.1 7 mole) of cyclopropylacetaldehyde oxime obtained in the same manner as in Example 4 and 20 ml of ethyl acetate as solvent. To the mixture 18.2 g (0.18 mole) of acetic anhydride was added at a temperature of 25C over 30 minutes. After completion of the addition, the reaction mixture was stirred for 3 hours under reflux. After the solvent had been distilled off, the residue was purified by distillation [75C, 110 mmHg (14.7 kPa)], to yield 10.5 g (0.13 mole; yield: 76.7%) of cyclopropylacetonitrile having the following properties.1H-NMR (270 MHz, CDCl3, TMS, ppm) ? : 2.41-2.33 (2H, d, J=6.92 Hz), 1.15-1.00 (1H, m), 0.79-0.70 (2H, m), 0.35-0.30 (2H, m).
