A solution of diglycolic acid 19 (17.40 g, 129.76 mmol) in 100 mL of anhydrous methanol was stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere then cooled to O °C. Thionyl chloride (21.72 mL, 35.51 g, 2.3 eq) was added dropwise over 10 minutes (min). The resulting mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature (rt) and was stirred overnight. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the resultant oil was dried under high vacuum to obtain 21.1 g (100%) of 34 as a crystalline, white solid.
