Hexadecanal (14)
According to the procedure of More and Finney [S2], Hexadecanol (13, 5.00 g, 20.62mmol, 1 eq) was dissolved in ethyl acetate (150 ml) and IBX (16.8 g, 60 mmol) wasadded. The solution was heated to reflux until the alcohol was completely converted(2.5 to 3.25 hours). After cooling, the solid was filtered through a frit and washed threetimes with ethyl acetate. The solvent was removed under vacuum and the crude product purified by column chromatography with 20:1 pentane/tert-butyl methyl ether(TBME). A colorless waxy solid was obtained (4.9 g, 20.4 mmol, 99%).
