2.2.2. Synthesis of N-(1-hydroxy-9,10-dioxo-9,10- dihydroanthracen-2-yl)benzamide (1a)
General procedure: A mixture of compound 3 (0.24 g, 1.0 mmol) and benzoyl chloride (0.2 g, 1.4 mmol) in 20 mL of toluene was refluxed for 1 h until the initial amino derivative disappeared (TLC monitoring). The reaction mixture was evaporated in vacuo to a volume of 2e3 mL, and diethyl ether was added. The precipitate formed was filtered off, washed with ether, and then chromatographed on a column with SiO2 (40e63 mm) using chloroform as the eluent. The main yellow fraction containing the target compound was collected and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was air-dried at 80 C for 3 h to obtain compound 1a as orange flakes (0.3 g, yield 87%).
