4.06 g (12 mmol) of (formylmethyltriphenylphosphonium chloride) was added to a 125 mL reaction flask and dissolved in 60 mL of distilled water. The mixture was stirred rapidly at room temperature (for about 30 minutes). 12-13 mL of 1 M NaOH (12 mmol, 1.0 equivalent) was added dropwise to the reaction system. The suspension was then stirred for another hour. After the reaction was completed, the reaction system was filtered through a funnel to remove insoluble impurities. The wet filter cake was then air-dried overnight by continuous air intake and indoor vacuum on a side-ear filter flask to obtain the target product molecule (FORMYLMETHYLENE)TRIPHENYLPHOSPHORANE. |

pink to brown crystalline powder | [Uses]
(Formylmethylene)triphenylphosphorane is used as Wittig reagent. It is also used as Pharmaceutical Intermediates. It is employed as raw material in organic Synthesis, Agrochemicals. | [reaction suitability]
reaction type: C-C Bond Formation | [Purification Methods]
Recrystallise it from Me2CO, or dissolve it in *C6H6, wash with N NaOH, dry (MgSO4), evaporate, and crystallise the residue from Me2CO. It can be prepared from its precursor, formylmethyltriphenylphosphonium chloride (which crystallises from CHCl3/EtOAc), by treatment with Et3N and extraction with *C6H6.
