Though having limited synthetic value due to the cost of organic germanium compounds, germanium is considered as a non-toxic alternative of many toxic organotin reagents. Compounds such as d tetraethylgermanium are used as precursors for germanium dioxide chemical vapor deposition in the microelectronics industry, being useful in the manufacturing of semiconductor films.
