Dark brown to tan solid. Insoluble in water. Used as an herbicide. | [Reactivity Profile]
LACTOFEN(77501-63-4) is a diphenyl ether derivative. | [Air & Water Reactions]
Insoluble in water. | [Uses]
Lactofen is a complex ester derivative of Acifluoren, a diphenyl ether herbicide. Lactofen can be used in postemergence applications and is commonly used as foliar spray. Lactofen is used in agriculture to control broadleaved weeds in soybean, cereals, potatoes and peanuts. | [Production Methods]
Lactofen is commercially produced via a 4–5 step convergent synthesis that begins with nitration of 4-chlorobenzotrifluoride to 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzotrifluoride using an acid mixture, followed by nucleophilic aromatic substitution with ethyl 2-hydroxypropionate under basic conditions to form the diphenyl ether linkage. Reduction of the nitro group to amine is achieved via catalytic hydrogenation. The key acylation uses 2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxyacetyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine in dichloromethane. | [Mechanism of action]
Protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibition, absorbed by foliage with limited translocation | [Pesticide Type]
