General procedure for the synthesis of 3-(acetylthio)-2-benzylpropionic acid from 2-benzylpropenoic acid and thioacetic acid: 16.2 g of 2-benzylpropenoic acid and 12.3 mL of thioacetic acid were added to a clean and dry round-bottomed flask, and the reaction was stirred for 1 hour at 30 °C. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was warmed up to 60 °C and the stirring reaction was continued for 4 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the excess thioacetic acid was removed by distillation to give the crude product of 3-(acetylthio)-2-benzylpropionic acid. Yield: 23.8 g. | [References]
