The general procedure for the synthesis of 2-(bromomethyl)-6-fluoropyridine from 2-fluoro-6-methylpyridine was as follows: 2-fluoro-6-methylpyridine (4.32 g, 38.9 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (NBS, 6 g, 33.7 mmol) and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN, 0.56 g, 3.4 mmol) were mixed in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 , 50 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to 80°C and kept stirring for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and insoluble impurities were removed by filtration through diatomaceous earth. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and purified by silica gel column chromatography with the eluent of petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (9:1, v/v). The target fraction was collected and concentrated to give 4 g of the yellow oily product 2-(bromomethyl)-6-fluoropyridine in 54% yield.
