Step 2: Synthesis of 2-bromo-5-chlorobenzaldehyde; Preparation was carried out with reference to the literature method (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124(7), 1354): a mixture of activated powdered 4A molecular sieves (800 mg/mmol of substrate), N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (2 eq.) and 2-bromomethyl-5-chlorobenzaldehyde (1 eq.) was stirred for 2 hours at 0°C in a N -methylpyrrolidone (0.16 M) were stirred for 2 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was filtered through a diatomaceous earth pad and the filtrate was subsequently concentrated under vacuum to afford the target product 2-bromo-5-chlorobenzaldehyde in 92% yield.

Step 2: 2-bromo-5-chlorobenzaldehyde; 2-bromo-5-chlorobenzaldehyde was prepared according to literature precedent (/. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124 (7), 1354): a mixture of activated powdered 4A molecular sieves (800 mg/mmol substrate), N- methylmorpholine-N-oxide (2 eq) and 2-bromomethyl-5-chlorobenzaldehyde (1 eq) in MeCN (0.16 M) was stirred at 0 0C for 2 h. The reaction was then filtered through a pad of celite and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound (92 %)
