Steps:

3.3b 2-Ethoxyacetonitrile

To a stirred solution of Compound 3a (1.0 g, 9.7 mmol) in THF (10 mL) at 0° C. was added pyridine (1.57 mL, 19.4 mmol) followed by TFAA (6.85 mL, 48.5 mmol).
The reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 1 h.
Aqueous NaHCO₃ solution was added carefully to the reaction mixture until pH=8 was attained.
The reaction mixture was extracted with CH₂C₁₂ (2*).
The combined organic layers were washed with 1N HCl, dried over MgSO₄, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give Compound 3b (0.80 g, 97%) as a yellow liquid. ¹H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl₃) δ 4.24 (s, 2H), 3.66 (q, J=6.9 Hz, 2H), 1.27 (t, J=6.9 Hz, 3H).
