EXAMPLE 7 A mixture of 1.1 g of methyl 4-oxobutyrate dissolved in 2 ml methanol, 4.05 g of 2-aminoethanol, and 0.2 g of 5% Ru/C was placed in a 70 ml glass-lined pressure reactor. The reactor was flushed and then pressurized with hydrogen to 1,000 psi, sealed and shaken in an air-oven at 100° C. for four hours. After cooling and venting of unreacted hydrogen, the mixture was filtered and analyzed by gas chromatography. The analysis disclosed complete conversion of methyl 4-oxobutyrate with formation of N-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone as confirmed by gc-mass spectrometry.
