(4-1) Synthesis of (S)-(1-hydroxymethyl)ethyl phthalimide L-alanine methyl ester hydrochloride (15.7 g) was dissolved in 100 ml of water, and under ice cooling, 10 g of sodium borohydride was gradually added. They were reacted at room temperature for 18 hours. The excess of the reagent was decomposed with acetic acid, and the residue was adsorbed on a column of 500 ml of Amberlite CG-50 (H form) at a pH of 6.0. When elude fractions which showed color reaction with ninhydrin were dried, 8.5 g of (S)-2-amino-1-propanol was obtained.
