Chemical Properties

Abies sibirica oil is obtained by steam distillation of the needles and twigs of Siberian fr The oil has a fragrant pine- like odor and pungent taste.

Chemical Properties

Siberian fir needle oil is obtained by steam distillation of needles and twigs of Abies sibirica Ledeb., the Siberian silver fir. It is an almost colorless or pale yellow liquid with a characteristic fir odor.
d²⁰₂₀ 0.895–0.912; n²⁰_D 1.468–1.473; α²⁰_D ?40 ° to ?25 °; solubility: 1 vol in ≤10 vol of 90% ethanol.The main constituents are bornyl acetate (20–35%) and the monoterpene hydrocarbons α-pinene (10–22%) and camphene (15–26%). The main producer of Siberian fir needle oil is Russia, with a quantity of ～50 t/yr.

The oil is an almost colorless to very slightly yellow liquid.

Uses

Odorant in perfumery, flavoring agent.

Definition

An essential oil obtained by the steam distillation of needles and twigs of several varieties of coniferous trees (Abies) native to both Canada and Siberia.

Essential oil composition

Main constituents of silver fur needles and twig oil include l-α-pinene, l-limonene, l-bornyl acetate, lauric and decyclic aldehydes, and probably a sesquiterpene.

Safety Profile

Mildly toxic by ingestion. A human and experimental skin irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
