t-BuOK (112.0g, 1.00 mol) was stirred under N2 in dry Et2O (3.0 L) in a 5 L flask equipped with an addition funnel. A mixture of butyronitrile (69.0 g, 1.00 mol) and ethylformate (77.7 g, 1.05 mol) was added dropwise during 3 hrs, the reaction mixture was then stirred overnight at room temperature. The mixture was cooled to 0° C., AcOH (57 mL) was added, the mixture was filtered, and the solid was washed with Et2O (500 mL). The combined filtrates were evaporated at room temperature on a rotovap to give pale yellow oil (95.1 g). The oil was dissolved in dry EtOH (100 mL), 99% hydrazine monohydrate (48 mL) was added, then AcOH (14 mL) was added, and the mixture was refluxed under N2 overnight. The solvents were evaporated and the resulting oil was chromatographed on silica gel with CH2Cl2:7N NH3 in MeOH. 22.4 g (20%) of 3-amino-4-ethylpyrazole was obtained as clear oil that solidified upon standing.
