Scheme for synthesizing Compound 1: 1,3-propanediol (60 g, 0.79 mol) was added into a 500 ml round bottom flask, then solid KOH (17.7 g, 0.32 mol) was added to remove the trace moisture in the 1,3-propanediol. Under agitation at 90° C., benzyl chloride (39.8 g, 0.32 mol) was added into the 1,3-propanediol using a dropping funnel. Then temperature was increased to 130° C. for a 2 h reaction. The reaction was stopped and cooled to the room temperature. After extraction of the organic phase using water/diethyl ether separation, the solvent was removed by reduced pressure rotatory evaporation, followed by reduced pressure distillation. 39.8 g colorless oily product Compound 1 was obtained with a yield of 77%. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz, ppm) δ: 7.36-7.28 (m, 5H), 4.51 (s, 2H), 3.79-3.75 (m, 2H), 3.66-3.64 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 2H), 2.44 (br, s, 1H), 1.88-1.83 (m, 2H).
