Steps:

A mixture of 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-nitropyridine 47 (15.0 g, 97.3 mmol), potassium carbonate (20.2 g, 146 mmol) and iodomethane (13.8 g, 97.3 mmol) in dimethyl sulfoxide (150 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction was then diluted with ethyl acetate (500 mL) and water (200 mL). The organic layer was separated and washed with brine (3×300 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to afford 48 (15.9 g, 97%) as a white solid: 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.72 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.37 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 3.95 (s, 3H), 2.54 (s, 3H); ESI MS m/z 169 [C7H8N2O3+H]+.
