Chemical Properties
Hafnium(IV) chloride is a chemical compound with the formula HfCl4. It is a white, crystalline solid that is primarily used in the production of hafnium metal.
Uses
Hafnium Chloride is an excellent water soluble crystalline Hafnium source for uses compatible with chlorides. Chloride compounds can conduct electricity when fused or dissolved in water. Chloride materials can be decomposed by electrolysis to chlorine gas and the metal.
Safety
When working with hafnium(IV) chloride, appropriate personal protective equipment should be worn to minimize exposure. Regarding environmental impact data, hafnium(IV) chloride does not pose significant risks if handled and disposed of properly.
Synthesis
Hafnium Chloride can be produced by the procedures:
The reaction of carbon tetrachloride and hafnium oxide at above 450 ℃;
HfO2 + 2 CCl4 → HfCl4 + 2 COCl2
Structure and conformation
Solid hafnium chloride is a polymer with octahedral Hf centers. Of the six chloride ligands surrounding each Hf centre, two chloride ligands are terminal and four bridge to another Hf centre. In the gas phase, both ZrCl4 and HfCl4 adopt the monomeric tetrahedral structure seen for TiCl4.
